From the Classroom to the Pulpit: A Powerful Trimester in Costa Rica

This past month marked the end of our first trimester in Costa Rica, and as we look back, we can clearly see God’s hand in every part of it. We have grown, been stretched, and had meaningful moments as a whole family.

Kayla preaching in Spanish

One of the most special moments came during the final week of classes. Kayla stepped up to preach her very first sermon in Spanish. She shared from Genesis 45:4–8, the story of Joseph, and spoke about how God does not waste any part of our lives. The highs, the lows, the pain, and the victories all become part of His redemptive plan. Sitting there and listening to her communicate that truth in another language was powerful. It felt like a glimpse of all that God is continuing to do in and through her.

Ministering in Alajuelita

The following weekend, Danny had the opportunity to preach at a church in Alajuelita, in the southern part of San José. It was one of those moments that reminds you why you said yes to the call in the first place. Many in the congregation are walking through heavy situations and needed hope. We loved being able to share the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus, with them.

Girls end-of-trimester celebration

At the same time, we have watched the girls grow in ways that honestly amaze us. They completed their Spanish trimester and participated in an end-of-trimester program that was filled with moments we will not forget. Malia confidently led the entire program as the MC in Spanish. She also sang and acted in a short story. Olivia narrated a short play about the parable of the lost sheep and also sang a challenging song, all in Spanish. Naomi did an interpretive dance to a Spanish song and also acted as one of the sheep in the flock in the parable of the lost sheep.

Along the way, all three of them have been memorizing and reciting Scripture in Spanish throughout the trimester. It's not just language learning, it's about watching them step into who God is shaping them to be.

Saying goodbye to dear friends!

We wrapped up the trimester by celebrating classmates who are now moving on to the next stage of their missionary journey. These goodbyes are not easy. In a short time, friendships here become deep and meaningful. Our girls especially have felt that, as some of their closest friends are now heading to Colombia.

As we step into this next season, we find ourselves right at the midpoint of our time in Costa Rica. There is a mix of gratitude for what God has already done and anticipation for what is ahead. We are excited to begin a new trimester next month and continue growing in every area where God has placed us.

How You Can Pray

  • Pray for our girls as they navigate the transition of saying goodbye to close friends and adjusting to a new season.

  • Pray for this next trimester, that we would step into it with fresh energy, focus, and openness to everything God wants to do.

  • Pray for our health. We have had a few minor health challenges in our family recently. Nothing serious, but enough to remind us of our need for God’s continued protection and strength. Please pray that God would bring complete healing and protect our family from any further issues.

Thank you for walking this journey with us. Your prayers, encouragement, and support mean more than we can fully express. We are reminded often that we are not doing this alone. You are part of every step as we continue preparing for what God has ahead in Mexico City.
